Wage Law Costs Less Than Some Predicted Landscaping Services

Landscaping Services is pleased by the city’s progress but questions whether there is adequate monitoring to make sure companies are offering their workers the required wage. She also wants the council to consider lifting an exemption that applies to the city’s ambulance workers so they could collect higher pay and benefits.
There are expected to be about 200 contracts with living wage provisions by June, mainly involving janitorial, landscaping, security and laundry services. Costs are likely to rise the most in the Park and Recreation Department, in part because of what the council’s budget analyst called “a significant disparity†between initial wages and the higher rate paid to landscapers.
