Msis New Green House

landscaping.jpg”>Eco-friendly advancements are being made in building design and construction—think sustainable materials, efficiency of resources, and energy-reducing wiring and appliances. If this topic interests you, the new Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit, opening tomorrow at the Museum of Science and Industry, is a neat opportunity to learn more about green buildings.

The exhibit is a real, fully functional, 2,500 square foot home squatting on the museum’s east lawn, demonstrating how landscaping, design, and technology can all work together to reduce the carbon footprint of a building. Private residences, as well as the examples of green architecture and design that have been creeping into the city’s skyline, are all contributing to the push to make Chicago one of the nation’s “greenest” cities.

Living Room In The Garden

Theres nothing like smelling the perfume of flowers and witnessing lush right in your courtyard! Outdoor living, with aesthetic utility, is at its best when nature dazzles the eye and nurtures the soul, explains Neera Gulati

Retreat spaces is what I would call them. Landscaping   If you have your own land and are building an independent house for yourself and the family, it would be a wonderful idea for you to create a living space away from your main house, which would be a sanctuary you will want to remove from the house to create a sense of privacy and solace. In this busy world, you would love to be away from the busy and create a space outside your house, that is either in the garden area or a backyard. Or if there is , you could do something in a or a terrace.

One of the most popular is the outdoor dining room and kitchen. Plans for outdoor can range from the basic to the outrageous, depending on your inclination and budget. Merely placing to take advantage of (or to avoid) the sun, with a barbecue set up nearby, may be all you need.

Even so, consider accents to dress up the space, like and . If you want to go broke, install an entire with weatherproof cabinets and to form the ‘walls’ or boundaries of the space which you can then dress up with lively tiles and a dining set, and use a to provide shade and some cover. are often the only access to nature that the modern lifestyle affords. You can create natural spaces at home. It certainly isn’t difficult to build . But it does take an appreciation for the ‘divide and conquer’ approach. We take it for granted that our houses are divided into rooms, but the concept for having similar may sound odd.

At first indeed, the biggest standing in most people’s way is that it just doesn’t occur to them to divide up a yard so as to maximize their enjoyment of it. The more conscious we become of , the more we can tailor them to suit our needs. Having separate allows you to create mini landscape designs. Just as you can paint or wallpaper an indoor room using a colour scheme unique to that room, so also you can use colour to make individualised statements for each of your . But here, instead of paint or wallpaper, you determine your colour scheme when you select the plants you’ll be using for the area. Proper application of colour theory in landscape design can even influence mood and perception.

More the merrier

The materials which you can use for can be different from the indoor rooms. For floors, for eg, you could use grass, patios or . For the walls, you could use , fences or informal hedges. For the ceiling pergolas, decorative canvas canopies, awnings or lawn umbrellas will be great. Keep both aesthetics and function in mind when constructing outdoor rooms. But in areas dedicated to physical activity, if you have to choose between the two, focus on function. Never compromise on safety. You can make up for compromises in aesthetics later, when you accessorize your outdoor rooms.

Below are examples of outdoor rooms and how to put them together.

Pool areas: around swimming pools presents specific challenges regarding safety, maintenance and  privacy. You don’t want people slipping on anything, you don’t want to spend all your time cleaning the debris, and you don’t want the neighbours peering in at you. In selecting a ‘wall’ to enclose the area, all of these considerations come into play. ‘Floor‘ in areas must be slip-resistant.

Meditation areas: For meditation gardens, (which is a wonderful way to de stress from your busy schedule), privacy is very much an issue. Here reflection, not physical activity, takes centre stage. Aesthetic consideration, consequently, will carry greater weight. Most people find more relaxing than hardscape, so consider planting hedges to form the wall of such outdoor rooms. For a floor, consider a combination of natural materials.

In meditation gardens, a ceiling may come in quite handy. Here, you’ll choose between aesthetics and functionality. A vine covered arbour may be more inspiring to gaze up at, than a lawn umbrella, but the latter will keep you and the books you may be reading, dry. If you’d like something more solid than an umbrella, consider installing a and covering it with fibreglass. But water shouldn’t be banned from contemplative outdoor rooms. If there’s any place in your yard for accessories such as garden fountains and waterfalls, surely its here. There is nothing like the soothing sound of bubbling water to put you into a reflective mood.

You could also create an living room outside. Deck it up with cozy furniture, speakers and ambient lighting, with of your choice, and you would love to use this place, all the year round.

Nowadays, most people want to live and entertain in a much more informal atmosphere. Guests also would love to gravitate towards the great room, which blends into the kitchen and .

These outdoor dining spaces should reflect the informal yet stylish design of the interior great rooms. Create an outdoor retreat that allows you and your guests to spill outside from the room. Don’t be afraid to mix chandeliers and old antiques outdoors, especially in outdoor dining areas. Utilise a touch of indoor style and unify the space by adding outdoor drapes, pillows and rugs to complete the look.

The use of colour, pattern and texture in fabrics is an excellent way to reflect the indoor space. Add colourful elements by choosing flowering to accent containers scattered throughout the outdoor living space.  Mix and match materials in these outdoor settings, juxtapose wrought iron with glass, steel with terracotta, wood against woven components. Outdoor living is at its best when nature dazzles the eye and nurtures the soul. Create your perfect casual environment out.

Rethinking The Home Garden

Delusions of grandeur run rampant in the gardening aisle. Lush landscaping and overflowing vegetable rows sound sweet and attainable. How hard can it be? Dig in the dirt; keep it watered.

Ah, neophyte exuberance.

Bob Polomski, chair of Clemson University’s horticulture department, said “smart small” is a better maxim. Garden Landscapin “It’s easy to buy and plant; where the rubber hits the road is in maintenance during the really hot summer months,” Polomski said. “Gardening doesn’t seem as much fun during the first week of August as it did in the first week of May.”

It’s an interesting time in gardening. Green concepts, the rage in industries ranging from autos to , are hitting horticulture as well. So-called softer materials, including organics, have reduced the need for pesticides and other toxic goop.

“In addition to being more environmentally friendly, these softer materials, such as horticulture oils, are very pest specific and break down very rapidly,” Polomski said. “The whole idea of sustainability in and recycling materials, all of that is trying to make us better gardeners.”

The time to plant is now. (According to Polomski, the last frost date for the Upstate is April 15.) So the “What” and “where to plant” are two other matters. Fruit or vegetable producing crops need at least six to eight hours of daily sunlight. Leafy plants require a minimum of four hours.

Proximity should also be considered. A vegetable plant shouldn’t neighbor a bush or tree requiring gnarly pesticides. For example, various hybrid roses need to be sprayed for black spot. Planting rosemary peppers beside those roses could turn your homegrown salad into Jonestown.

But why would produce and non-edible intermingle, anyway? Two reasons: ease and aesthetics. Planting row after row is convenient if vegetables are grown en masse. But for casual gardeners, mixing a few producing into the landscape allows for simpler watering responsibilities.

The strategy can also add compelling texture to your yard. Polomski recommended a few edible for :

• Fairytale eggplant — The variety’s violent and purple stripes provide subtle yet exotic color.

• Hole mole pepper —“This is a good looking pepper that has a dark chocolate color,” Polomski said.

• Purple haze carrot — Polomski called the purple haze, named after the Jimi Hendrix tune, “really cool.” And yes, it is purple.

Red lettuces, purple cauliflower and various hues of potatoes can also invigorate sightlines.

“This idea of intermingling works great if you don’t want to donate a whole section of your yard to a garden,” Polomski said.

Container gardening is another consumer-friendly trend. The niche involves the pre-packaging of vessel and plant. Some nurseries will even custom assemble containers to a gardener’s specifications.

The practice is an extension of transplants —the tiny that are purchased for planting instead of seed. In additions to instant gratification benefits, transplants are also usually more successful than crops grown from seed, Polomski said.

“According to a recent Garden Writers Association survey, home vegetable gardens are increasing in popularity this year. Part of the reason is the price of food has made people think about growing their own again,” Polomski said. “I think that bodes well because I’ve been under the impression home gardening has been on the decline for a long time. You have to go back to the World War II victory gardens. Now it’s easier. You don’t have to have 40 acres of property; you just need a container.”

When selecting a limited amount of to grow, opt for the nutritious and expensive. The first requirement is easy to understand, and sweet potatoes offer the most healthful pop. For the latter consideration think of it this way:Garden Landscapin If it costs a lot at the grocery store, grow it. Red and yellow bell peppers, for instance.

But your decision needs to be practical. If you’re going to grow okra, make sure you’re not the only one in your family that will eat it.

“Growing your own is not only about trimming your grocery bill,” Polomski said. “It’s just great exercise and I like to see people, especially younger kids, spending more time outdoors and seeing how stuff is grown. It doesn’t just show up on grocery store shelves. Some of the younger generation may be completely unaware of that bit of the story.”

New Homes and Real Estate in Sedona

Sedona, Arizona has seen a significant increase in visitors and residents over the past several years. If you have ever visited, you would not be surprised. Sedona offers visitors and residents alike, beautiful scenic views of red rocks and mountain landscapes. The recent growth has attracted new and an increase in the demand for new housing communities.

Homes for sale in Sedona are attractively priced, and amongst state-of-the-art fixtures and energy efficient , many new homes in Sedona currently offer buyers exceptional value for their money. Be it an existing home or a new home, making a home investment in this city is sure to bring in its rewards in terms of built-up equity value in the coming years. Given today’s housing market situation, this is particularly true. Home sales have slowed somewhat over the past several months, which has resulted in buyers having more options to choose from. Many industry experts predict to significantly increase as we move closer towards the latter part of 2009.

There are currently plenty of choices for potential Sedona new home buyers such as single-family homes, condominiums, modular homes, builder move-in ready homes, townhouses and much more. Prospective homebuyers in the Sedona area should research a good real estate agency in the area to aid them with their new homes purchase.

When hiring a real estate agent it is recommended for buyers to seek out the services of a buyer’s agent. This will ensure that your interests are protected in every aspect of the home buying transaction. A buyer’s agent works to appease the buyer and will, more than likely, always disclose all information available on the particular property under consideration. Unlike seller’s agents who are often more interested in getting through with the deal; which causes them to focus more so on only the positive aspects of each property.

Another important issue that many new home buyers will overlook is to have a home inspection done on the property that they are seriously considering purchasing. It is a common misconception that new homes are not without minor repair issues. Be sure to have a home inspection conducted on your potential new property, even if the home is a new build as new homes are often without minor repairs. If the seller or the builder refuses to acknowledge the existence of a problem condition specified in the home inspection report, or refuses to help, then the buyer should beware. A good real estate agent will bring this to their client’s attention.

If you are building a custom home in Sedona, a local real estate agent will be able to suggest several reputable home builders. Many builders offer a unique look and design to their homes and pre-existing floor plans; you can also have your own architect design your perfect home and have a local Sedona homebuilder build it for you.

Buyers are also seeking homes with good features, upgrades, latest and fixtures that consequently home builders are also coming up with homes that cater to specific buyer needs, so that buyer doesn’t have to do all of their changes into the property after a purchase. Earlier homes had basic requirements, but in today’s home the emphasis is on aesthetic interiors and upscale features are at very affordable rates.

Before a buyer decides to take up a home builder’s offer, buyers must check out on the builder’s reputation. The builder must be someone who is experienced and who has successfully completed past projects in a timely manner. Builder rates must be compared by current market conditions and buyers should also ask their builder questions on which upgrades they are capable of providing with the new home purchase.

When buying a new home always be sure to talk to your family and friends to see if they can refer a reputable real estate agent to you. Shopping for home builders in the Phoenix area can be done with some ease, but be sure that the builder of your choice is within your price range.

If you don’t already have a real estate agent in mind, may we suggest that you ask family, friends, or possibly neighbors to refer a good agent to you. Be sure that their experiences were good when dealing with this agent and that the agent met all wants, needs, and desires. Living Room Fire Prevention – Section 2

Once you have learned the basic steps of preventing caused by heaters, continue on by reading this section to learn how to inspect and maintain the other living room risk elements.

Electrical Safety

You should start by checking outlets, sockets, and extension cords to verify that they are not overloaded or worn down. Make sure that extension cords are not set under rugs or carpets and that they are not looped over nails or other sharp objects that could cause them to tear. Sockets must be covered with child-proof fittings if there are children in your home.

Creat a clearance around TVs and stereos to allow proper ventilation that will prevent overheating. The fuses in the plugs of your TV and stereo should be rated correctly and wiring should not be worn or damaged.

For lighting such as lamps and other fixtures you should use bulbs with proper wattage, which is smaller than or equal to the maximum wattage prescribed by the manufacturer.

Open Flame

It is important to not leave burning cigarettes unattended, even when placed in an ashtray. If left unnatended, they can fall onto furniture, newspapers or fabrics and smolder unseen, and can develop into a serious fire within hours. Always be sure that cigerettes and other smoking materials are properly extinguished before you leave the room or retire for the evening.

The contents of ashtrays should be cold before you throw them into the trash. Ashtrays should be solid and stable, made of non-combustible materials. Ashtrays that are too small or too full can be hazardous, so make sure they are frequently emptied.

Matches and lighters should be kept out of the reach of children. Children should be educated that matches and lighters are dangerous and are not toys. Childproof lighters and matchboxes are recommended if children are in your home.

Candlesticks

Candles are popular, romantic, and soothing, however, they can be dangerous due to open flames. Utilize a proper candlestick holder and make sure that the candle fits firmly inside it. Keep plenty of space around the candle to minimize the possibility of fire even if it falls. Candles should be kept away from curtains, furniture, or anything else that can catch fire.

FP Appliances fails to sell finance unit

F%26amp;P said today its board had decided to retain the finance unit after assessing interest from bidders who conducted due diligence.
%26quot;We said at the beginning of this process that Fisher %26amp; Paykel would only divest the finance business if value exceeded our internal valuation,%26quot; F%26amp;P chief executive John Bongard said. %26quot;This disciplined process has not resulted in a sale and is a decision that we are very comfortable with.%26quot;
The company put F %26amp; P Finance on the block , with analysts suggesting it could fetch between $250 million and $300 million with some cash likely to be returned to shareholders.
A spate of finance company collapses and the global credit crunch, however, had led to market scepticism about sale prospects.
Shares in F%26amp;P fell 8 cents, or 3 per cent, to $2.30.

Middleincome people facing financial stress

Figures released from Statistics NZ show food prices had risen 5.2 percent in the year to February, and petrol prices are predicted to hit $2 a litre by next year.
Invercargill mother-of-two Heidi Davies said her household expenses were getting out of control and she had to seek budgeting advice to help make ends meet.
Her husband, Phillip, worked fulltime as a truck driver and since September last year has been on a regular, stable income.
Before that, the couple had a period of bad luck and Mr Davies was jumping from one job to another, creating debt for the family they are now struggling to get out of, she said.
%26quot;Financial pressure causes arguments, never-ending arguments, and you end up saying things you dont mean. It causes a stressful environment over everyone in the house, they all feel it.%26quot; Their debts got so bad they initiated a Summary Instalment Order to avoid bankruptcy, where their debts were consolidated into one lump sum.
The family also had to downgrade to a smaller car, cutting their petrol bill from $125 to $70 a tank, Mrs Davies said.
Feeding the family, which included Cassidy, 5, and Zavier, 2, was one of the biggest expenses, with about $400 a fortnight being spent on groceries.
To save money, Mrs Davies would look through supermarket fliers noting down the cheapest prices for the items on her grocery list.
She would then shop at PakNSave but, if something was cheaper elsewhere, she would stop by at Countdown or New World on the way home, she said.
The growing cost of everyday items such as bread, milk and cheese was of concern because they were staples, as were fruit and vegetables.
%26quot;Cheese has become a luxury item.
%26quot;To get it on special its still $11 for a kilo of cheese.
%26quot;Its very sad when things that were staples, its now a case of where can I take that from (to buy them).%26quot; She believed the Government should look at the cost of these everyday items compared with junk food.
%26quot;For the cost of two bananas you can buy a family sized bag of lollies. Two litres of milk is $4 but you could buy five bottles of fizzy drink for that.%26quot; It took a while for her to admit she needed help with budgeting, pride getting in the way, she said.
%26quot;It was either get food or pay bills and then get food and pray the (creditors) didnt come banging on the door because we couldnt pay them back that week.%26quot; Since talking to Jubilee Budgeting Advisory Service the family had become more conscious of their energy consumption, and were switched off at the wall if not in use, Mrs Davies said.
Jubliee Budget Advisory Service budget adviser Darlene Coomer said the rising costs were putting a strain on more and more people, and their service was growing consistently busier.
No longer the domain of beneficiaries and low-income earners, more of the services clients were on middle to high incomes and were struggling to pay their bills, she said.
%26quot;People are having to make choices; buy food or keep warm.%26quot; A lot of their clients needed emergency food parcels or help heating their home, including for coal.
%26quot;People are either going really hungry … or dont have enough to buy healthy food and are living on noodles and things that are really unhealthy for them.%26quot; Families who were earning just more than the threshold for receiving Work and Income benefits and allowances were suffering, Mrs Coomer said.

Burger King outlet gets flamegrilling

The lunchtime rush turned into an emergency after staff noticed smoke building up around the ceiling of the restaurant at the corner of Elles Rd and Tay St shortly before 1pm.
The smoke prompted the evacuation of the restaurant while customers waiting in the drive-thru were also sent packing.
The nine staff working at the time stood on the footpath on Elles Rd as the fast-food outlet filled with acrid black smoke.
%26quot;Its just gone on fire in the vent, we dont know anything,%26quot; one staff member said.
Invercargill Fire Service acting chief fire officer Neil Ladbrook said at the scene the sandwich construction of the ceiling and roof of the building was a concern because its construction meant %26quot;flash-over%26quot; could happen easily possibly leading to collapse.
Two initially attended the blaze with Mr Ladbrook calling a second alarm meaning a further two were shortly on the scene.
Elles Rd between between Forth and Tay streets was closed to traffic with diversions in place.
Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus entered the building with a thermal imaging camera to ascertain the extent of the blaze while a positive pressure ventilation fan was used to evacuate smoke from the restaurant, Mr Ladbrook said.
Incident controller at the scene Alan Goldsworthy said the cause of the fire had been traced to a large extractor fan in the ceiling that had been disconnected to allow repairs, but a broiler in the kitchen that was not supposed to be used was in use at the time.
%26quot;It was in use causing heat to build up, igniting fat deposits.%26quot; However, a spokesman for the restaurant brands parent company TPF Restaurants Ltd disputed that claim, saying the fan and broiler could not be used in isolation from each other.
TPF Restarants Ltd general manager Glenn Corbett said once damage to the restaurant was assessed the company hoped to re-open it within a week.
Firefighters stayed at the scene for two hours monitoring the situation while damage was limited to the ceiling and roof surrounding the extraction fan.
Unlike other fast-food outlets, Burger King was not a franchise-based operation in New Zealand, being owned by TPF Restaurants Ltd.
