Titan Eddie George Defines Refines His Brand

Ex-Tennessee Titan Eddie George made his mark on the playing fields of the National Football League over nine seasons and pocketed a Heisman Trophy as a star running back at Ohio State before that Equipment Landscaping.

But these days, George is more interested in building a corporate identity to rival other ex-athletes such as professional golfer Jack Nicklaus, ex-pro quarterback Roger Staubach and basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

Last week, in an interview with Business Editor Randy McClain, George discussed his goals for a landscaping and graphic design firm he co-founded five years ago, and brainstormed about how to shape what he calls the “Eddie George” brand.

n 2000, I went back to school to finish up my landscape architecture degree. … I was 16 hours short. I didn’t want to leave that undone. I had aspirations of doing things business-wise after I finished playing football, and on top of that I was going to be just the first or second athlete at Ohio State to ever go through their landscape architecture program.

So, that’s something I wanted as an accomplishment under my belt. Equipment Landscaping A year later — after getting my degree — I called my professor, Jim Hiss, who was instrumental in helping me get through the program and asked his advice on starting my own landscape architecture firm. How could I do that?

Given the fact that I hadn’t practiced in the profession, I felt like my main focus in starting the company would be to bring relationships that I had already established in the business community to the table. And pair that with expertise of others to create our company.

I would be the business developer and market the firm and make sure we were producing the correct product.

Richard McBride, Jim Hiss, Tedd Hardesty and (later) John Haas in Nashville — all of them have a connection to Ohio State and the landscape architecture program. We started in a small box-like office in Tedd’s home and shortly thereafter, about two years, we merged with an existing land planning firm (in Columbus, Ohio) to give us that balance of land planning with landscape architecture. We have offices in Columbus and Nashville and about 35 employees. We are about to open another office in Toledo, Ohio. We have four or five equal partners.

We are slowly but surely going into markets where I have had success in my playing career (which ended in 2005) and I am known in the community.

Art Studio NONA Art Gallery & Studio Neapolitan Naples Daily News

Behind the doors of NONA: Barbara Groenteman and Walt Spitzmiller met on Shirley Street in Naples and soon teamed up to open NONA Gallery %26 Studio on nearby J%26C Blvd. The two are part of a growing number of artists spread along the streets of an industrial neighborhood they’re trying to develop as the North Naples Art District.

Photo Gallery

Art Studio: NONA Art Gallery %26 Studio

The gardener: Groenteman is a transparent watercolor artist who paints tropical images in a realistic fashion. “I was always a gardener,” she said. “Orchids, flowers. For me, I paint things that are happy … so that people can see it the way I see it.” Before moving to Naples she was a creative director for magazines in New York City.

The golfer: Spitzmiller, who worked as an artist for Sports Illustrated, is known for his figurative landscapes and portraits in oil, many of which focus on golf. “It was a very special time,” Spitzmiller said, remembering when illustrators were in consistent demand. “It was the end of an era.” Currently, Spitzmiller is working on commissioned paintings for pro golfer Jack Nicklaus.

Art duo: The artists can be found painting in their studios in the back of the gallery Monday through Friday, and occasionally on the weekends. Spitzmiller worked alone for most of his life, but now enjoys having a partner. Spitzmiller tunes his radio to ESPN and Groenteman to self-help shows, but they said it seems to work.

Emerging art district: Artists in their North Naples neighborhood are planning to host Underground Art Wednesday. Art enthusiasts can pop into several studios and galleries from 6 to 9 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month starting in November. “You get to meet the artists,” Groenteman said.

Art as a career: “It’s a job,” Groenteman said. “You don’t choose it.”

“It kind of chooses you,” Spitzmiller said. “I had five years of university training. You continue to retrain yourself constantly … You’re looking for your own vision.” Spitzmiller describes his paintings as bunches of abstracts that together represent a story. “The super realism stuff just bores me,” Spitzmiller said.

NONA opens to public: The duo moved into the space in May and renovated it. Orange once donned the walls, and the floors were splashed with floral carpet. Now wood floors, flat gray walls and white French doors lead to their studio spaces. Although the gallery is open to the public now, it will have a formal opening Saturday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

IF YOU GO

– Location: NONA Gallery %26 Studio, 2079 J%26C Blvd., Naples

– Hours: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and by appointment

– Opening ceremony: Saturday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

– Phone: 572-3386 or 248-7617

Questions never to ask an artist

– How long have you been painting?

“Since birth,” Barbara Groenteman says.

– How long did this take you?

“A lifetime,” Walt Spitzmiller says.
