Polk Commissioners Urge Fast Progress On Landscaping Rules

Polk needs to move forward quickly with landscape regulations that could save water, county commissioners told county planners Monday.

The discussion occurred during a joint work session between the County Commission and the to discuss issues ranging from water to joint planning agreements with cities and the future of phosphate land Landscaping Contractor.

Commissioners also wanted to know what the fiscal impact of the proposed regulations will be.

Growth Management Director Tom Deardorff said he plans to have the regulations ready to be presented to the within 60 days.

He said the proposed ordinance has been posted on the county’s Web site, Services and the plan is to contact anyone with an interest in the topic.

Commissioner Randy Wilkinson said he’d like to move quickly because the issue has been under discussion since 2000.

Commissioner Bob English agreed, but with a caveat Landscaping Contractor.

Contractor “I don’t want 196 pages of pablum,” he said, explaining he wants to make sure the ordinance is specific enough to be effective.

Black Heritage Festival is coming to Lakeland

Leisure Services will put on the 2nd Annual Black Heritage Festival at the Medulla Community Center, 1049 Parker Road in Lakeland, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The free festivities will highlight African-American contributions in Central Florida. Outdoor family fun includes food, music, entertainment, bounce houses, face-painting and crafts. Weather station and soil moisture sensors at the Camp Mack Grove near Lake Wales could reduce irrigation needs

State water-management district officials have agreed to partially fund a project that will reduce the amount of groundwater pumped for irrigation at a 950-acre citrus grove in east . The $100,000 project involves installing a and soil moisture sensors at the Camp Mack Grove northeast of Lake Wales, which will help with more precise , the Southwest Florida Water Management District reported. During freezes, the citrus grower will have exact weather information for the grove and can pump water at the best time, instead of pumping throughout the night. The moisture sensors and automated valves allow to occur when needed.

Our position Water managers haven’t done near enough to push conservation

Central Florida’s water crisis has two faces, but never fear: Officials charged with managing it say the region can survive it — if folks follow their lead.

We’re not convinced.

The first face, the worst drought in memory, has the South Florida Water Management District gearing up to impose limits on the times folks can water their lawns.
